Home Educators Around Texoma (H.E.A.T.) announces spelling bee champion

WICHITA FALLS – Esther Burford sank her head into her hands in relief when the moderator told her she had spelled “expression” correctly and was the 2023 Spelling Bee Champion.

Paul Coraccio, president of Home Educators Around Texoma (H.E.A.T.), presented the
championship trophy to Esther, age 12, after the annual Spelling Bee which was held at the Lamar Family Activities Center on Wednesday, March 8th.

2nd place winner was Abigale Smits (13), who also was awarded a certificate for Enunciation. The 3rd place winner was Flora Berre (12). Additionally, Walker Berre (11) was awarded a certificate for Poise.

The bee lasted 29 rounds and went through 118 words. Moderator was Jean Hall, and two judges were Elaine Matamoros and Beth Tate.

H.E.A.T. has been hosting annual spelling bees for more than 16 years.
