Grandfield OK Tornado

(GRANDFIELD, Okla.) — Tornado season is just ramping up, and conditions are already very peculiar. Here is information from our favorite tornado scientist on a twister three and a half miles tall.

From Reed Timmer

“The monster tornado last night northwest of Grandfield, Oklahoma appeared to have tornado cyclone structure all the way to above 18,000 feet AGL as estimated by radar donut hole.

The Linwood, KS EF4 tornado we sampled by rocket launch appeared to have tornado cyclone structure up above 12,000 feet AGL.

This is an incredibly powerful tornado last night in SW OK, and thankfully it was over unpopulated terrain.”

May 8; Siren Testing

(SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.) — Region 22 Emergency Management and Scotts Bluff County Consolidated Communications Center will test the outdoor warning sirens in Gering, Scottsbluff, Terrytown, Lyman, McGrew and Harrisburg on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024, at 10:00 AM.

This test will only last for approximately one minute and will include the Western Nebraska Regional Airport and Western Sugar. These tests are conducted on the second Wednesday of every month through October.

In case of inclement weather on the morning of the test, the test will be canceled for that day. The purpose of these tests is to ensure the sirens are in proper working order in case the time comes that they are needed for a real emergency, such as a tornado, damaging straight-line winds, or chemical spill.

Emergency Management and 911 want to remind the public that outdoor warning sirens are designed for those persons who may be outdoors during a warning to go indoors and tune in to local news television or radio for further information. They are not designed to be heard indoors.

The public is encouraged to have a weather alert radio for indoor alerting, or to download any of the alerting apps available to the public. This would include the Smart 911 app, which goes along with the local Panhandle Alert system. To sign up for Panhandle Alert, visit http://panhandlealert.org/.

To sign up for the Smart 911, search Smart 911 in the app store for Apple or Android.

There is a siren policy posted on the Emergency Management web page as well as on the 911 Center’s web page. Those websites are http://www.scottsbluffcounty.org/emergency-management/emergency-management.html and   http://www.scottsbluffcounty.org/911-communications/911.html

$7 Million Drug Bust

(SEWARD COUNTY, Neb.) — On Thursday, April 25, 2024, a deputy with the Seward County Interdiction Task Force initiated a traffic stop on a Toyota Highlander for a violation of the Nebraska Rules of the Road near MM 382 eastbound 180.

During the traffic stop, the deputy became increasingly suspicious that the driver, the sole occupant, was involved in criminal activity. A K9 was deployed for an exterior sniff of the SUV. As a result, a probable cause search of the SUV was conducted.

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy located a trash bag and three (3) totes that contained a controlled substance. Further investigation determined the controlled substance to be crystal methamphetamine with a total weight of 200 pounds. The approximate street value is over $7.2 million.

Sergio D. Jaimezazueta, 44, of Stockton, CA, was taken into custody without incident as a result of this traffic stop. Jamiezazueta was turned over to federal authorities for further court action.

Standoff Ends Peacefully

(NORTH PLATTE, Neb.) — The situation in North Platte has finally been resolved. Please read through to the end of the article for all the details on the lengthy standoff.

Here is what we posted during the event.

[April 30, 2024 8am]

From Midwest Media by Melanie

A man in North Platte who struggles with alcoholism is fighting a battle today with himself. However, when a neighbor reported a shot fired outside law enforcement needed to protect others. The local police at state patrol have been on scene for hours trying to get this man to come outside peacefully. The people in the neighborhood and area school have been scared with few details, and law remains on scene at 6:24 pm Monday. Prayers the man lays down and sleeps of his drunken state and the situation is resolved peacefully. From North Platte Police
Update from North Platte Police Department

At approximately 1:40 PM on April 29, 2024, police officers responded to a report of a person firing a rifle around Burlington and McCabe. The suspect was a resident of the 1500 block of Burlington Blvd. A safe perimeter was established and shortly after police arrival, the man came outside but quicky retreated into his residence after officers asked to talk with him. Telephone contact was established with the suspect. He was uncooperative and there was evidence that he was under the influence. The suspect made it clear that he would not voluntarily exit the house and hours of negotiations did not produce positive results. At 4:10 PM, the suspect exited the house with a shotgun and then retreated into the house. The suspect told the police negotiator of his intent to have the police shoot him.

At approximately 7:45 PM, a contact team of officers introduced a chemical agent into the suspect’s home. Shortly thereafter, the suspect came out the front door of his home carrying a shotgun. He complied with orders to put the weapon down and was taken into custody. The 52-year-old suspect was taken to GPH for evaluation, and he remains hospitalized at this time.

During a search of the home, officers located an additional loaded shotgun as well as two rifles. Criminal charges are likely after the case is submitted to the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office.

There were no injuries to law enforcement nor the suspect. The North Platte Police Department received assistance from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Game and Parks.

A RAVE Alert was issued shortly after the incident was reported and the appropriate safety protocols were activated by staff in the nearby schools. These situations are dangerous for curious people coming to the area. They place themselves in danger and cause a distraction for law enforcement. Please remain out of the area when asked to do so.

You will not receive RAVE emergency alerts unless you opt-in by creating an account at smart911.com.

Resolved
************
The standoff in North Platte continues at 5 pm. This has been “scary” for people in the neighborhood, including children and staff at Our Redeemer Lutheran School where the school went on lockdown today out of caution of the unknown threat in the area.
Melinda Mitchell shared these pictures taken from her property just before 5, Monday evening.

***********

Update 4 pm.

I’m told a man is held up inside his home after neighbors reported he fired a weapon outside. He is heavily intoxicated and law enforcement is attempting to talk to him on the phone. It is my understanding that due to his record he should not be in possession of firearms, and he is refusing to leave his home at this time, but he is also perhaps too drunk to know what he is doing right now.

*******

Please avoid area. Hopefully any school traffic will be addressed in a detour if necessary. Added: Comments include information about Maxwell moving their school route today.
