January 19, 2022 – EMM Mustang Day 2 (Video): Started off working on touching his face and leading. Then did some groundwork where he let me get his BLM tag and the rope off! If anyone has any questions about the training shown in the videos feel free to leave a question in the comments and I’ll try to answer it promptly!
EEM Mustang Day 2 (Photos): Began today’s session by roping the mustang off Tex again. Once he was caught he calmed right down and got to work focusing on me.
We worked on leading, touching his face, and rubbing his neck. He was very curious the whole time and tried quite hard to be brave. He really didn’t try to challenge the rope pressure at all so I felt comfortable getting off of Tex and working with him on the ground a bit.
I introduced the flag which was quite scary to him at first but eventually I could rub his neck and shoulder with it.
Once he was comfortable with the flag on his neck I started working my way closer with my hand to try to get his BLM tag off.
It took about 15 minutes for him to feel comfortable with my arm up by his eye. I moved slowly and calmly untying his tag and he was very curious to sniff it when I showed it to him.
Then he stood perfectly while I took the rope off his neck. It was a wonderful second session, he’s really starting to trust me and his natural curiosity is starting to come out!
The mustang got to meet Useless Carl who was useless as ever today. All I need him to do is move nicely/calmly away from the horses instead of prancing towards them. The mustang wasn’t phased in the slightest by any of his antics.
Fat Useless Carl probably weighs more than the mustang. Mustang really didn’t mind the fat steer being around, he was more focused on me.
