To hear God’s call, you have to hear His voice. To hear His voice, you must know and belong to God. Jesus said,
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:27
Don’t expect to hear God in a loud, booming voice because He often speaks in a small, quiet whisper as He did to Elijah on Mount Horeb.
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
1 Kings 19:11-12
You may hear His voice in something you read or hear in music, see in art or nature. He often speaks through people, as He spoke through His prophets all through scripture. Foremost, God speaks to you directly through His written word, the Bible. Being in His word and meditating on it is crucial to recognizing and discerning God’s voice and call.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
I often hear God speaking to me through my thoughts, especially when I’m quiet and still. “What would Jesus do? What does Jesus want me to do?” my mind will ask me. As I reflect, God calls me to renew my mind and remove the barrage of noise and clutter that infiltrates my head daily. When I take time to be still, the static disappears, and I hear God’s voice better and more clearly.
The more you develop a personal relationship with God, spending time with Him in prayer and scripture, the more you’ll hear when He calls. When you engage in regular conversations with Him as you would with a friend, you’ll begin to clearly and correctly hear what God has to say to you. Ask God to give you an openness to hear His voice and respond to His call in faith. Make a habit of intentionally and expectantly listening for whatever God may be calling you to do. You are qualified!
