Power Outage Update!

By Doug Parker, City of Gering

The City of Gering would like to assure the public that staff are aware of the most recent power outages and are working to minimize the risk of future outages.

City Officials believe that it is due to the voltage conversion from 2400 to 7200. According to Electric Utilities Superintendent Doug Parker, “What we’re finding with the conversion to 7200 is that much wider clearances are needed between our lines and trees and grounding. We’re now seeing outages caused by animals in areas where we have rarely had issues before.

Our staff have been systematically going through these areas and making adjustments where needed in an attempt to prevent animal interactions with our system, which should increase power reliability.”

In addition to increasing clearances in the system to prevent outages caused by animals, the City is continuing to work on the Electrical Distribution System Study with RVW, an electrical engineering firm. The City is currently about 80% through the first phase of this study, which is mapping and gathering information on the distribution system.

Once this phase is complete, staff expect the engineers to be able to make recommendations on protection devices, system settings, and identifying any other potential points of failure within the system. This will allow staff to make additional improvements to increase power reliability for our residents.

Thank you.
