Assassination attempts and plots on the President of the United States have been numerous, ranging from the early 19th century to the present day. Most have been gun related and only 4 were actually ‘successful’.
- 1835 – Andrew Jackson (R) – failed attempt, pistol misfire
- 1865 – Abraham Lincoln (R) – shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth
- 1881 – James Garfield (R) – shot and killed
- 1901 – William McKinley (R) – shot 2x in the abdomen, died 8 days later when the wound became septic
- 1912 – Theodore Roosevelt (R) – failed attempt at a campaign event, shot in the chest, but his speech slowed the bullet
- 1933 – Franklin D Roosevelt (D) – while he was president-elect, shots fired during speech in Miami, failed attempt, killed the Mayor of Chicago
- 1950 – Harry S Truman (D) – 2 Puerto Rican activists attempted to shoot Truman by breaking in to the Blair House where the president was staying, stopped by Secret Service before gaining access to the President
- 1960 – John F. Kennedy (D) – Richard Pavlick prepared to detonate his dynamite-laden car as Kennedy was leaving mass, but saw his wife and kids and decided against it. Was later arrested while waiting for another opportunity. He claimed Kennedy money bought the White House and the Presidency.
- 1963 – John F. Kennedy (D) – shot and killed by Lee Harvey Oswald
- 1974 – Richard Nixon (R) – Samuel Byck hijacked a plane intending to crash it into the White House, was stopped by a policeman and committed suicide
- 1975 – Gerald Ford (R) – two failed attempts within a 3 week period in CA by two women
- 1981 – Ronald Reagan (R) – shot by John Hinckley Jr., almost died, had a punctured lung and internal bleeding.
- 1994 – Bill Clinton (D) – Francisco Duran fired 29 rounds at the White House, sentenced to 40 yrs
- 2001 – GW Bush (R) – shots fired on the White House
- 2005 – GW Bush (R) – grenade thrown at the president, but didn’t go off
- 2016 – Donald Trump (R) – at a NV campaign rally, Michael Sandford tried to grab an officers gun, confessing he wanted to kill Trump, but was arrested instead
- 2024 – Donald Trump (R) – failed attempt at a campaign rally, shot in the ear
Of the assassination attempts listed above, most have been Republicans. But the most recent was an attempt on the life of Donald Trump on July 13, 2024.
The “mistakes” and “gaffes” made that day led to “an American hero who died protecting his family, two other Americans grievously wounded, and a former president [and] presidential candidate almost assassinated.”
