(BAYARD, Neb.) — One of our sponsors suffered a great loss recently with an unexpected death of one of their employees. Not only did they lose a friend and a coworker, but now Dusty’s mother Lori could really use some help with funeral expenses.
We are hoping that there are several in our scanner community that are willing to help take some stress off a grieving mother during this process of laying her son to rest. If you cannot donate, we ask for your prayers and to please share this post.
Here’s what was posted when they learned of Dusty’s passing…
“Unfortunately our team and family have had a great loss. Dusty Johnston passed away on 9/22. He was an amazing friend, son and coworker to many. We have created this Go Fundme to help with funeral costs for his mother Lori. If you are able to help in any way it would be greatly appreciated. If you can not help monetarily please share this post.” – Dennis Applegate, Stonegate Seamless

On Monday, September 22, 2025, Dustin “Dusty” Lee Johnston, age 40, of Bayard, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly at his home. Cremation has taken place, and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Chimney Rock Cemetery in Bayard.
Dusty was born on February 18, 1985, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Herbert Lee and Lori Lee (Meyer) Johnston. He grew up in the Scottsbluff/Minatare area, attended Highland Elementary, was active in FFA, and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 2003.
Dusty had many natural talents and a gift for learning new skills. He worked in a variety of occupations where his knack for fixing and building things always shined through. He loved working on cars—especially Hondas—cooking meals to share with family and friends, and spending time with his loyal dog, Buddy.
He will be deeply missed by his parents, Herb (LaNell) Johnston and Lori (Kelly) Scott; his aunt Lisa Nelson and uncle James Johnston; his nephew Tristian Reynolds; many other relatives and friends; and his beloved dog, Buddy. Dusty was preceded in death by his sister Cheryl Johnston, several grandparents, and his dog Athena.
This fundraiser has been organized by family friend Dennis Applegate to help Dusty’s mom, Lori, with funeral and final expenses during this difficult time. Any amount you are able to give will go directly to Lori and will be deeply appreciated.
Here is the GoFundMe. Please contact Dennis at Stonegate Seamless Roofing & Construction or Linsey at Off The Water for direct donations.
