Let’s check back in with David Meisner, custom harvester from Elk City, Oklahoma, on what he’s heard down in Texas and conditions in his area.
“So I’ve heard down in Texas that they are combining and going, but there’s still some stuff I can say even around here in the Elk City area, just because of the variance of the way the crop was and the moisture and when you had it, when you planted it, there’s some wheat around here that’s not going to be ready for about 10 days as well. That was some of the later planted wheat, and I don’t believe it really came up very good until closer to Christmas time. So it’s going to be, what is there, if it’s not being hayed or just left alone and tilled under, then it is going to be stretched out a little bit and be ready for some rain, especially since this week, most of this week, we’ve been either side of 100 degrees, and yesterday was really bad.We had a lot of 45-mile-an-hour wind around here and a lot of dirt blowing, which I know that’s happening in plenty of other parts of the country as well, just hot and dry and windy. Normally we don’t have such a variance. I think just the way it turned out for moisture and when it got planted and being so dry, it just didn’t have moisture getting when it was planted, and then we had some moisture later on.Because I can say that we had some cover crop that didn’t come up until we had a snow, and we had a snow around the 5th of January, which was really thankful to have that.”
