Raising Cattle That Fit

I’m Brian Hale, sitting in for the late Howard Hale as we continue his legacy of speaking with cattlemen and women from around the globe. Co-host David Woodruff has Jim Jensen on the phone. Let’s get right into it.

That’s why you need to be buying animals that are capable of working on your ranch. And to be real 85% of the people producing seed stock right now are not raising them to be capable to go to most ranches. And that’s where we differ.

What’s the percentage of ranches on the continent that are over 10,000 feet? Less than 1%, like very, very small percent of 1%. Yeah, they are now having this same problem. It’s called right heart failure in feedlots all the way down to a couple thousand feet.

And I believe that it’s caused by obesity. So what we’re doing at high elevation will have some reduction and effect even at really low elevation because there’s a huge number of cattle dying of right heart failure at low elevation. So some of the work we do will actually serve that at that low elevation as well.

How many head do you run? We run anywhere from 2,000 to 2,500 head of time. So you’ve got quite a bit of land. You got any deeded land? Actually, we’ve got quite a bit of deeded land.

But we do run in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of acres of BLM and Forest Service leases as well. Who’s better to work with, the Forest Service or BLM? I must admit that with the new administration, they’re both pretty dang good to deal with. I think BLM would have been better than the Forest Service in the past, but Forest Service has been pretty decent here lately.
