I’m Brian Hale, sitting in for the late Howard Hale, as we continue his legacy of speaking with cattlemen and women from around the globe. Our guest is Cody Jorgensen of Jorgensen Land and Cattle. Can you tell us a little bit more about your operation? I understand you have a distinct philosophy there on your ranch, Cody.

Yeah, absolutely. We’re blessed to be in an area where the pheasants are very good. We’re in what they consider the golden triangle.

We have people all over the United States that come in and like to hunt us. We’ve been doing this for quite some time. 2012, we built a hunting lodge.

From that point on, we’ve offered an all-inclusive pheasant hunt, and it’s a three-day hunt, four nights a day. We can handle up to two groups of 20, so we can handle 40 people at any given time throughout the course of the year. With respect to the land that we have, we think as a family that if we can farm the ground like it needs to be farmed properly, no-till and the proper practices, have the ability to graze that land at some point throughout the course of the year, and then the third thing would be to do some sort of what I call production agricultural entertainment or hunting.

When it comes to raising cattle, maternal efficiency and greater calving ease are two very important traits, and the American Galvee Association does a great job on their website laying out this information.

U.S. Meat Animal Research Center data shows Gelbvieh females have the smallest mature cow size of the four major continental breeds. This reduced mature cow size allows for puberty to be reached at an earlier age, which leads to calving earlier in the season and producing a heavier calf at a younger age. Visit Gelbvieh.org.
