Suspected Arson; One in Custody

(PORCUPINE, S.D.) — Firefighters are investigating a suspected arson after discovering three separate fires burning near Porcupine early Saturday, according to Alpha One Fire & Rescue.

Crews responded to the Brooks Fire around 8 a.m. Saturday and found it was actually three distinct fires burning in the area. One of the smaller blazes was knocked down quickly, allowing firefighters to redirect resources to the larger fires burning to the north and south.
Based on what responders observed at the scene, Alpha One says the fires are being treated as suspected arson. One person is now in custody, and authorities are looking for additional individuals who may have information about the fires or involvement in setting them.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations has taken over the investigation.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs Forestry and Wildland Fire Management now estimates the Brooks Fire has burned roughly 15 acres. A Type 3 incident management team has taken command of the response, with firefighters, engines, water tenders, dozers and aircraft working to contain the fire and keep nearby structures safe.

About 16 buildings sit near the fire, though no evacuations or road closures have been ordered at this time.

Alpha One credited fast reports from local residents for helping crews respond quickly.
