HUSA Sep 17 2026 – Michael Torrie

Welcome to the Harvest USA Report, I’m Brian Hale. An original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting now expanded throughout North America. David Woodruff here talking to Michael Torrey, Grassy Lake, Alberta.

That rain, good for growing but you got a disease, was that like a mildew mold or what was that? Well there was definitely some rust and mold on the lower leaves and we sprayed foliar fungicide twice and we were even considering a third fungicide but we were bumping up against the pre-harvest window so we elected not to and it probably the damage was already done by then so it was just bad timing I think for us. Perhaps if we had timed the fungicide a little better we could have avoided some of this damage. So what did the winter wheat yield? Was it up in the A’s? Our winter wheat was 100 across the board so that was was excellent we felt although I think we could do slightly better.

I think next year we’re going to start using growth regulator on the winter wheat to make it shorter and if it’s shorter then we can avoid some of the late season lodging that we had and I think that will bump the yield by at least 5 bushel an acre right there. So it was there you just couldn’t pick it up? No, where the crop lodged especially under the pivot it just didn’t yield as well. Some people think that when it kinks the stem over then it can’t get as much nutrient up the stem to fill the That was Michael Torrey with our host David L. Woodruff.

There’s more on the web at HarvestUSAReport.com. That’s going to do it for today’s Harvest USA Report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I’m Brian Hale.
