Let’s find out what’s going on in the harvest world. Looks like our host David Woodruff has Kip Campbell from Bancroft, Idaho on the phone. Let’s check in.

This is part of a conversation where they’re talking about high nitrate content and we found it interesting. Let’s listen in. So have you ever had nitrates on frozen alfalfa? No, I’ve never had an issue with it.

I’d never heard of it and I talked to my neighbor and said, oh yeah, I have heard of it once. Really? And my son was asking me about, what about my grass? Do you think we’re going to have nitrates? I said, well, I’ve never heard of it in grass. Mostly cereal grains, oats and things like that.

Yes, that’s what I’ve heard of them. There’s more wheat and oats and barley. The stress seems to bring the nitrates up.

Yeah, which this year has been dry enough and hot enough that it’s a possibility. There could be some stress there. Yeah, and I was told as long as you don’t feed it straight, like you said, cereal type out hay, the grain hay, you’ll be okay.

If I do have an oat hay or a wheat hay, I just feed alfalfa with it and mix it. Right, yeah, I had that happen. It wasn’t from freezing, it was from too much hog manure fertilizing it.

How? It stressed the plant like crazy and boy, we started popping out dead hairless little calves like crazy. I pulled that stuff and started mixing it off with others and it helped, but more than half my herd came up empty, not pregnant. Talking crops and cattle today with our host David L. Woodruff and our guest Kip Campbell.

That’s going to do it for today’s Harvest USA report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I’m Brian Hale.
