Talking Garlic today on the Harvest USA with Taber, Alberta Community Garden Head Honcho Andy Puskas.
Let’s listen in…
Welcome to the Harvest USA Report. I’m Brian Hale, an original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting, now expanded throughout North America.
Let’s check in with our co-host, David Woodruff, and see who he has on the phone today. We’re talking to Andy Paskus. He’s the head honcho at the community garden.
And you haven’t had garlic before? No, we’ve done garlic. This will be our third year. Always been quite successful.
So we had a bunch of seed garlic donated to us this year. Plus, we had some seed garlic that we hung on to from last year’s crop. And like I say, we’ve… Garlic’s done well.
And yeah, we expect to have a decent harvest next year. And yeah, all for the food bank. We, the Tabor Food Bank, we’re looking at the possibility of selling some of it at the local farmers market and proceeds going to the food bank.
Because 1,400 cloves of garlic, that’s a lot of garlic. So if we can sell that to, you know, defray costs of stuff at the garden, then through the food bank, then we’ll see how that works. So now when you harvest that, it’s like pulling the whole thing? Yeah, depending on how loose the soil is, you may have to even dig it out.
Because it’s, the bulb is totally underground. Yeah. It’s not like an onion that most of it is above ground.
It’s, we harvest the whole bulb, let it dry, let it season for a week or two in the sun. And then we either cut the tops off or the tops will break off. And, and then you’re going to store it like for your own long term use, then you do a lot more of the seasoning stuff that we’re going to grow.
It’s going to get eaten. Covering North America on the Harvest USA Report. Some interesting information there on garlic from Andy Puskas, head honcho at the Tabor Community Garden in Tabor, Alberta, Canada.
That’s going to do it for today’s Harvest USA Report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I’m Brian Hale.
