Kip and I played baseball against each other in the 80’s and have lots of fun stories, but here’s one I didn’t know…

A Fun Kip Gross Story

By Kip Gross

On this date in 1991, I made my first ever Big League start with the Cincinnati Reds on the road against the Atlanta Braves. I rarely took the bus to the field as I always liked getting there early to get a feel for the day and be able to relax.

Because it was the 4th, there were very few cabs available in the city so the bellman had an idea as a limousine was pulling up to let one of the band members of Toni Orlando and Dawn out. It believe it was Telma Hopkins, who was one of the famous backup singers. Anyhow, he asked the limo driver if he would take me to the stadium, and he agreed.

As I arrived at the stadium someone from the press was there to see me get out of the limo and he decided to run with the story saying that Kip Gross goes in style to his first Big League start which made me catch a lot of shit from everyone on the team but I thought it was really funny.

Game time is approaching, so I decided to go out on the field as early as I usually did, and to my surprise, the ENTIRE field was filled with local high school bands, all playing patriotic music for the fans. The problem was that it was probably 120 degrees on the field, and all of the band members were wearing their wool outfits to play the part.

As I’m sitting in the bullpen, which was off the left field line, paramedics started running on the field with stretcher after stretcher carting these kids off the field because of heat exhaustion but the bands continued as if nothing was happening lol.

It was a crazy sight, to say the least, lol. We went on to win the game, but there’s definitely a reason why it’s nickname is HOTLANTA!

Have a great 4th of July and
Happy Independence Day!
