SBCOSCANNER Offers Solutions to Reduce Unnecessary Panic
As your laser-focused LOCAL NEWS source, we continue to cover this national news story only because it did affect our local communities recently.
State Police were on scene at the University of Oklahoma Friday evening to investigate a potential active shooter incident.
The following message was sent from the school, “OU-Norman Emergency: There is an active shooter at the Van Vleet Oval. Take immediate action now. Run. Hide. Fight!,” the first warning said. In later updates, the university changed the description to “possible shots fired.”
THEREIN lies the problem! The University, much like the high schools, are making a HUGE mistake by ANNOUNCING that there IS an active shooter.
Remember, scanner traffic is not news until confirmed, and eyewitness accounts are often unreliable.
Then, once the ‘official’ school puts out an alert like that, everyone repeats it as fact. THAT IS WHERE PANIC BEGINS. They put out these alerts AS IF they are actual news.
At Scotts Bluff County Scanner, we are continually trying to educate the public on the difference between scanner traffic and actual news. Schools are making a SERIOUS MISTAKE by not qualifying these incidences as a ‘report of an active shooter’ or ‘scanner traffic’ vs ‘there is an active shooter’.
Remember, scanner traffic is not news until confirmed, and eyewitness accounts are often unreliable.
You’ll notice how OU later changed it to ‘possible shots fired.’ At that point, the PANIC had already begun with parents, media, and even police being TOLD there IS an active shooter.
When we post an alert, it is Scanner Traffic UNTIL we have investigated the incident enough to write a news story with verification directly from the source whenever possible.
Our goal is to inform the public of the truth in a manner that reduces panic to a minimum. We can not help the fact that some people panic anytime something sensitive is posted. We also have some folks who get upset if we don’t post breaking news. Remember, we take time to verify, verify, verify so that we will continue to be the most accurate, not necessarily fastest, news source for LOCAL news.
The message from OU, as well as the premature announcement over the intercom on March 2, should have been worded much more carefully until FULLY verified.

Lots of traffic stops tonight! Scottsbluff Police Department is running a traffic campaign for distracted driving. That might be why there is an increase in traffic stops.
In Other Scanner Traffic . . .
8:02 am – Train vs semi County Road 9 near Morrill dump, 69 year old male, was able to self extricate himself from semi. Minor injuries, Morril 99 en route to hospital with patient.
11:48 am – Person stuck in the elevator at UNL on Avenue I. Scottsbluff Rural Fire called.
3:42 pm – Non injury accident East 11th and 20th, smoke coming from vehicle. Party is now going to hospital to be checked.
4:34 pm – Juveniles on the roof at Pioneer Park. RP states they may be stuck up there. Officer assisted them off of the roof.
4:46 pm – E 19th 2 pits acting aggressively.
5:01 pm – Ave B. Hispanic male walking in traffic. Appears intoxicated.
5:35 pm – Maroon Dodge Ram 1500 westbound Hwy 26 to Mitchell. Several juveniles reportedly not wearing restraints.
6:06 pm – 45yo female en route to RWMC, chest pain.
6:29 pm – Karobus Rd. Verbal disturbance got physical over neighbors’ dogs in the yard.
7:55 pm – Shoplifting Dunham’s, Male on bike, black beanie white tie-dye shirt and jeans, 2 backpacks.
8:36 pm – WNCC. 2 dirt bikes in the parking lot. Main campus on the sidewalk.
9:12 pm – Possible rollover, RP saw car go in ditch, Morrill county deputy has been dispatched to possible rollover on 385, Mile Marker 1. Deputy not able to locate the accident, dispatched another one. Unable to locate. They possibly drove off after entering the ditch. No contact with anyone at this time.
10:10 pm – East Overland welfare check. Pushed medical alert button. Said it was an accident but RP said male seems confused. Wants him checked.
10:12 pm – Valley enroute with patient for 5th floor. Needs to advise security they are coming.
11:08 pm – W 24. Requesting PD for 16-year-old son who came home very intoxicated.
1:43 am – Gering Fire paged to P St for female assault victim.
Let’s all be on the lookout for nighttime troublemakers and put these criminals behind bars.
For instance, around 3:00 a.m., a tweaker in the hallway at RC Scot Apartments got a visit from the Scottsbluff Police Department after being called to check him out.
