Two Witnesses (The Book of Signs, Ch. 23)

God will not write off the billions of unbelievers groping in darkness after the Rapture. He will send rescuers – voices to proclaim the gospel – offering a secure lifeline out of the depths of their impending doom. This lifeline will take the form of the two witnesses. In Revelation 11, John reveals much about these two witnesses.

The Personality of the Witnesses

I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prhphesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.

Revelation 11:3

These witnesses will be actual persons who will speak with human voices and perform miracles by the power of God. These two anointed ones will be men fueled by the power of God’s Holy Spirit to shine lights into the darkness of the Tribulation period. Most scholars identify one of the witnesses as Elijah, the old testament prophet. As to the identity of the second witness, the most likely candidate is Moses.

The Prophecies of the Witnesses

The duration of their ministry is stated in exact terms, three-and-a-half years. These witnesses will prophesy to both Jews and Gentiles, wich may be God’s purpose in sending two of them. The content of their prophecy will be judgment.

They will preach impending judgment daily and relentlessly throughout their entire three-and-a-half year minsitry. These two witnesses will confirm God’s message of judgment and His call to repentance with their perfectly meshing testimony.

The Power of the Witnesses

They will be filled with the Spirit of God, who will empower them with both speech and actions to convict their audiences of coming judgment and the urgency of repentance.

• The Power of their Plagues
  • the plague of death
  • the plage of drought
  • the plague of disease

The Persecution of the Witnesses

Although God will protect the two witnesses until they have completed their ministry, he will finally allow the Antichrist to destroy them. The death of the witnesses will expose the extreme depravity of the antichrist and the unregenerate people of the Tribulation period.

• the display of their bodies
• the delight of their enemies

The Preservation of the Witnesses

But the story of the two witnesses will not end in their deaths. three-and-a-half days will pass while the world celebrates their deaths, and then two astounding events will turn their celebration into abject terror.

• Their Resurrection
• Their Rapture
• Their Revenge

Yet even amid the horrors of the Tribulation period, some will heed the two witnesses’ message of redemption and respond to the loving call of God.
