Reflections on One Year Ago
One year ago Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department was dispatched to what would become one of the largest fires in the department’s history, the Paradise fire. It came right after the Carter Canyon fire when agencies were already stretched thin. It consumed 170 acres, just on the very West side of Scottsbluff causing numerous evacuations. Crews from 16 agencies were on scene, with Scottsbluff Rural remaining on scene for 4 days.

Pickleball Courts Now Open

Why is pickleball sweeping the nation?
Medium blogger Randy Li writes…
One of the main reasons for pickleball’s soaring popularity is its accessibility. Unlike tennis, which typically requires a large outdoor court, pickleball can be played on a smaller scale. For example, you can fit three pickleball courts in the space of a single basketball court. I also heard of many outdoor parks repurpose 2 tennis courts for 6 pickleball courts. Also, pickleball can be played indoors at gyms, so the rain or extremely hot and cold weather won’t be in play! This adaptability allows more people to participate and enjoy the game.
But what really sets pickleball apart is its ease of play. While tennis can be daunting for beginners, with its complex rules and techniques, pickleball offers a much more inviting entry point. You don’t need years of experience or advanced skills to start enjoying pickleball. In fact, most people can jump right in and rally from the get-go. After learning the rules, I was able to play a competitive game from the start. The court is smaller, the rules are simple, and the learning curve is significantly reduced. I played tennis with some friends who never played, it was difficult to even get a single rally, let alone a game. I would even go so far as to say pickleball may be easier to play for beginner than ping-pong, since the ball, paddle, and especially the court are bigger, so its hard to miss. Pickleball is a game that is easy to pick up and fun right away. – Randy Li
