Ever wondered about that big old elevator in Jamestown? Check this out.

When the federal government purchased large quantities of grain from Midwest farmers in the late 1950s, the skyline of the prairie was changed. Millions of bushels were held for shipment in huge concrete terminals. One of these was the Peavy Elevator in the southeast part of town.

The other elevator started as the Garvey Elevator, later known as the Pillsbury Elevator west of Jamestown. This was the first industrial project successfully secured by the Jamestown Industrial Development Commission. The peak years were in the early 1960s. So much grain was handled that an addition was made. The capacity at its peak was 3.7 million bushels!

What A GRIND Aurora Chasing was this week! We scored BIG!!! Patience was tested!

Two days ago myself and Colorado chase friend Aaron Rigsby turned our sails North in anticipation of 3-4 possible Earth hitting CME’s “Coronal Mass Ejections”. These were forecast to hit both Wednesday Night (late) and Thursday Night/Friday Morning Early. This trip truly tested us to the MAX on being patient. So much so that after waiting a day and a half we nearly called it quits. Wednesday night we busted. Thursday night was the true test. We waited and waited….and waited more and still nothing. We decided to call it a night. As we were driving South, right at the last possible chance, the Big CME of the 4 hit and shortly after rewarded us with an incredible show right before sunrise!

What was special about this particular event was how much Red Aurora there was. You could see every bit of the reds with the naked eye (with is pretty rare). It certainly was the most vibrant red pillars and Aurora I’ve seen yet! The pictures below are some of the better times with the bright Red Aurora and Pillars. I love the tree shot. The Abandoned house shot we tried to make work (we had a much better spot but clouds screwed us). The house was cool, but the amount of trash and debris around the property was pretty distracting. Still an EPIC Aurora Event!!!
