White Christmas?

By NATWARC

UPDATED FRIDAY DEC. 22

LARGE STORM SYSTEM WILL BRING CHANCES FOR RAIN AND SNOW TO MUCH OF NEBRASKA FROM LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO TUESDAY EVENING

This storm is still over 24 hours away but will bring impacts to much of Nebraska from late Saturday afternoon to possibly Tuesday evening. Forecasts will likely change so stay tuned for updates.

By early Sunday morning, rain will first change over to snow in the Panhandle. Then, as this storm system moves east, the rain/snow line will move eastward during the day on Sunday. Expect snow in the Sandhills and southwest Nebraska by Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. It will likely stay mainly rain east of Highway 281 on Sunday.

On the front side of this system, warmer air and a larger band of rain will likely move northeast out of Kansas into Nebraska from late Saturday night through Sunday through Sunday evening.

By Christmas (Monday) morning the backside of this system will impact the eastern half of Nebraska. We could see a bag of wintry precipitation on Monday. Depending on how much colder air moves behind this, especially with temperatures hovering in the low 30s, we could see a rain/snow mix, all snow, or possibly even icy precipitation like sleet. It’s still too early to pin down precip type.

By early Tuesday morning, the backside of this system will likely still impact eastern Nebraska. Accumulating snow is possible, especially across portions of north-central and northeast Nebraska. Precipitation may linger as long as Thursday evening – night. Any precipitation should end by early Wednesday morning.

NDOT Reminder

Happy first official day of winter….Only 155 days until spring. Just kidding….maybe
