Crawford County Sheriff’s Office
News Release
July 8, 2024

In the early morning hours of July 8, 2024, a deputy encountered a subject in the parking lot of Skippy’s Bar and Grill. The subject was wanted in connection with a vehicle theft and the deputy advised him that he was under arrest.

The suspect attempted to flee from the deputy and he gave chase. The deputy was able to deploy his taser to subdue the suspect but the suspect was able to break away and flee again. The deputy pursued him and brought him to the ground, where the suspect began physically fighting and resisting the deputy.

The suspect then wrestled the taser from the deputy during the struggle in an attempt to use it against the deputy. However, the deputy had turned the taser off during the struggle.

The suspect continued to fight and resist the deputy for nearly 4 minutes before backup arrived. The suspect was taken into custody with the assistance of another deputy before being treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

He was then transported to the Crawford County Adult Detention Facility pending formal charges. The deputy was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was later released.

On today’s date, a warrant was issued in this case for Orzo Miller, 33, of Cuba, for the following charges:

  • Assault 3rd Degree (Special Victim)-Class D Felony
  • Disarming a Peace Officer-Class D Felony
  • Resisting Arrest-Class E Felony
  • Property Damage-Class E Felony

Miller was given no bond for these charges.

An additional warrant was issued for the stolen vehicle that occurred on July 1, 2024:
Tampering with a Motor Vehicle-Class D Felony

Miller was given a bond of $5,000.00 cash/surety for that charge.

The suspect in these cases is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

Sheriff Layman commented that the deputy’s “actions exemplify the dedication and resilience we value in our team. His quick thinking, adherence to protocol, and unwavering commitment to public safety ensured a positive outcome in a volatile situation. His actions reflect the high standards and bravery I expect from our deputies.”
