Investigation Concluded in Scheuerman Case

(SIDNEY, Neb.) – Cheyenne County Attorney’s Office has released the findings of an autopsy, conducted on June 5 by Weld County Coroner’s Office, for Mattea Scheuerman of Sidney, who’s body was discovered June 3.

Investigators collected items at the scene including a nearly empty bottle of Equate Sleep Aid. Surveillance and purchase records confirmed she had purchased the sleep aid at a Sidney grocery store. Authorities have determined that Scheuerman died of drowning while intoxicated on diphenhydramine, an active ingrediend in the sleep medication.

The county attorney’s office has stated that an exhaustive investigation has ruled out foul play.

Mattea was a 2019 graduate of Sidney High School. Her death sparked an outpouring of community concern and tips to law enforcement, which officials said aided in the investigation.
