(MITCHELL, Neb.) — On Wednesday, October 22nd at approximately 3:00 a.m., Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a coal car on fire at the Union Pacific South Morrill Rail Yard. When crews arrived U.P. staff led them into the railyard to the location of the car.
Luckily the fire was not very far along and quick work was made in extinguishing the fire. Crews spent approximately an hour on scene. It is not uncommon for this type of fire to happen. We typically get a couple every year. Coal can actually spontaneously combust under the right conditions.
MVFD responded with three trucks and six personnel.
