Jail Employee Arrested

UPDATE January 22, 2026

Panhandle Scanner has learned that the original charges stemmed from the accused jailer turning off his body cam, in order to pass along some THC gummies. The court affidavit also stated that Olberding did not accept any money during the transaction.

(FALLS CITY, Neb.) — The Richardson County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) announced on January 2, 2026 that a jail employee has been arrested following the conclusion of an internal investigation.

The investigation revealed that the employee was in violation of multiple RCSO policies and procedures, as well as several Nebraska state statutes. Upon completion of the investigation, the findings were referred for criminal review, and the appropriate charges have been filed.

The employee was taken into custody and is no longer performing duties with the Richardson County Sheriff’s Office. Due to the ongoing legal process and personnel privacy laws, no further details will be released at this time.

UPDATE from Richardson County Sheriff’s Office on January 3 at 7:22 AM stated that the investigation has concluded and found that 32 year old Derek J. Olberding was arrested and charged as a result of the findings.

Olberding has been charged with the following offenses:

  • NRS 28-416(2)(B) – Deliver / Distribute a Controlled Substance, Class IIA Felony
  • NRS 28-416(3) – Possession of a Controlled Substance, Class IV Felony
