Pursuit Leads to Officer Involved Shooting

(MITCHELL, Neb.) — 42-year-old Victor Martinez suffered at least one gunshot wound when both a Mitchell Police officer and a Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputy discharged their firearms on January 16, 2026. Martinez was last reported in critical but stable condition at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado.

The NSP Special Investigations Team is investigating the incident that occurred Friday evening.

No officers were injured. There is no threat to the public. Below is the original scanner traffic reported that evening.

According to scanner traffic, Mitchell PD is requesting NSP assistance in a pursuit on Experiment Farm Road. On the lookout for a 2015 grey Dodge pickup with WY 7214. Originally, Mitchell PD was just trying to conduct a traffic stop and the suspect took off toward WY.

Suspect has been apprehended. Ambulance en route to RWMC with 22 yr old male with a GSW head wound to left side. Still breathing, but labored.

UPDATE: NSP went to secure channels shortly after our initial report. According to witnesses in the area, the pursuit ended near S5 Rd & Canal Rd toward the Wyoming state line. (Map updated)

UPDATE: Patient is being transferred to SMC in Denver. Please pray for this patient and the officers involved.
