Choose Bright Swimsuits for Safe Summer Fun

As families head to pools, lakes, rivers, and beaches this summer, here’s a safety tip many people don’t think about:

The color of a child’s swimsuit can make a big difference in how easily they can be seen in the water.

As shown in the graphic below, some colors quickly disappear underwater or blend into the surroundings, especially in lakes, ponds, and murky water. Bright colors such as:

  • Neon Orange
  • Neon Yellow
  • Neon Green
  • Bright Pink

are often much easier to spot than darker colors like:

  • Black
  • Dark Blue
  • Dark Purple
  • White

While no swimsuit color replaces proper supervision, choosing highly visible swimwear can provide an extra layer of safety when every second counts.

  •  Always maintain active adult supervision.
  •  Designate a “water watcher.”
  •  Use properly fitted life jackets when appropriate.
  •  Teach children basic water safety skills.
  •  Consider bright, high-visibility swimwear when shopping this season.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to have a fun, safe summer around the water.
