Welcome to the Harvest USA Report.
I’m Brian Hale. An original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting, now expanded throughout North America. Let’s check in with our co-host, David Woodruff, and see who he has on the phone for us.
Jeff Wilkinson? So chickpeas is what? They make hummus out of it. That’s the big one. Okay.
So it’s a high-protein bean then, is it? Yeah, it’s a pulse crop, yeah. How is it for oil content? I don’t know if it even has any. I don’t think it’s in any way an oil seed.
So then when you’re combining, not being an oil seed, we’ve had guys out here raising hemp, and every round they’ve got to stop and blow the manifolds off because stuff starts to smolder. Set the combine off. No, it’s not usually like that.
I mean, usually sometimes if you get just the wrong amount of wind and static electricity, sometimes you get it, but there’s nothing really special about chickpeas as far as any of that stuff goes. Just more like, most like a lentil or something really. Oh, yeah.
Well, somehow I’ve missed chickpeas. I mean, there’s got to be a lot of it grown, and I don’t really know a lot about lentils. My degree is animal science and beef and pork and stuff.
I have mechanical engineering, so there’s a lot of this biology stuff that’s a little fuzzy to me too. Well, either way, mechanical engineering has got to be good with working with all that machinery. Yeah, there’s lots that’s applicable.
How many combines do you have to run for an outfit that big? We have two combines. Two combines, one seeder, one big sprayer. And you do it all yourself, or do you have to hire custom cutters? No, we do it all ourselves.
Occasionally if it’s wet or something, we’ll hire the airplane for some spraying, but basically we do it all ourselves. Yellowgrass, Saskatchewan, farmer and harvester, Jeff Wilkinson with our co-host David Woodruff. That’s going to do it for today’s Harvest USA report.
There’s more on the web at harvestusareport.com. Thanks again for listening, and may God bless. I’m Brian Hale.
