Are you putting in any wheat this year? We’ll be doing a bit of Durham. You don’t have any winter wheat, do you? No, not this year. Have you ever used winter wheat as a crop? In the past, once or twice, usually we’d do hard red spring wheat, but we’ve been doing a bit more Durham lately.

We do use some winter wheat more as a cover crop, or oats or barley or something like that, but we don’t do a whole lot of winter wheat, no. I’ve noticed that fall rye in the area has been used as a winter cover crop. Have you ever used rye? Not that I remember.

It seems to me I remember Grandpa Marvin saying, when we were talking about his dad Albert, he said, now dad started to prosper when he started raising rye. I know LaRon has said, rye is forgiving. You can do anything and it’ll still give you a fairly good crop.

But in my experience and lifetime, I think only twice was rye a high price for $5 a bushel, which years ago for $4 a bushel was a really good price, and I think I got in on that one.
