A vehicle accident on Wednesday knocked out some stoplights in Scottsbluff.

The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 26 and East Overland Drive. One vehicle struck a modular box that powers and controls the traffic lights at that intersection, so therefore it kicked them off. Both the City of Scotts Bluff and Nebraska Department of Transportation were on scene assessing the damages and fixing the lights.

Now is a good time to remind everyone how to treat a stoplight that goes out of service like this. It is to be treated as a four-way stop. Pretend that each person has a stop sign, and each driver then yields the right-of-way to the person on their right.

The right-of-way means if two vehicles arrive at the same time at the same place, the vehicle on the right gets to go first. As a courtesy, if it’s close, we let the driver on the right go, and we proceed around the circle appropriately. So when you come to a four-way stop, always look to your right and yield, if necessary.

This applies to unmarked intersections as well, as many accidents happen where there is no stop sign present. Always use caution when approaching an intersection.

In Alliance, more charges have been filed in a child sex abuse case. The investigation began in May of 26 after the Alliance police received a report that a minor had been sexually assaulted on multiple occasions.
