Sugar Beets to Take the Field in 2027

(GERING, Neb.) — Gering will have a new summer baseball team in 2027 as the Gering Sugar Beets make their debut in the Independence League Baseball season.

The collegiate summer team will play its home games at historic Oregon Trail Park Stadium, bringing affordable, family-friendly baseball to the Panhandle from late May through early August.

The Sugar Beets name pays tribute to the crop that has long been an important part of Scotts Bluff County’s agricultural heritage and the development of the region.

Organizers aren’t starting from scratch when it comes to building a successful summer baseball franchise. The ownership group previously launched the Canyon County Spuds in Caldwell, Idaho, as one of the seven founding teams of Independence League Baseball in 2021. The franchise later relocated to Casper, Wyoming, in 2024.

That experience will now be brought to Gering as the organization works to build a team that becomes part of the community and gives families another reason to fill the stands during the summer.
