Nebraska Cowboy Poet RP Smith

Welcome to the Cattleman’s Corner. I’m Brian Hale sitting in for the late Howard Hale as we continue his legacy of speaking with cattlemen and women from around the globe. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth.

With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity, and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business. For more information about the Gelbvieh and Balancer Edge, visit gelbvieh.org. We got a rain last night so that puts me in a really good mood. There you go.

How much rain did you get? It’s 30. Doubles what we’ve had for the year. I mean it’s been super dry so we got a long way to go but that’s the best start we’ve had.

And your ranch is located there in the central part of Nebraska, right? Yeah, Custer County. What kind of cattle do you run? Oh, the market’s kind of forcing us to go back to black but I like the red angus and thought maybe they were a little more heat tolerant but I haven’t had a lot of big proof on that point and there’s sure a difference when you go to sell them. They sure like the black hides better.

And you just sold some cattle this year, right? We sold all of our steers back in January which was a little earlier than normal but the pasture situation had a factor on that feed situation. What we sold last week was just the very tail end of our yearling heifers and the rest of them we’ll expose to a bull or AI for a very short time period and whatever doesn’t get bred really quick we’ll go to town and the rest of them we’ll try to hold our cow herd genetics together with.
