The Blizzard of 2022

The Unsung Heroes of The Valley

By Brian Hale / Scanner News

(SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.) — As predicted well in advance by several weather services, a persistent pattern of snowfall and torrential winds have plagued the panhandle since late Monday. The snowfall depth predictions were a little shy, but the wind has made up the difference in a big way. Most of the troubles are with drifting across roads and driveways, making it impossible for people to leave their homes. You’ll see drifts over buildings in the stories below.

As we move into day 3 of this monster storm and the attempted cleanup effort, we reflect on the amazing rescue stories that took place in the valley as facilitated or communicated through the Scotts Bluff County Scanner facebook page and our Scanner Insiders group. Many other groups on facebook did the same; Nebraska Panhandle Vehicle Recovery, Nebraska Panhandle Weather Alerts and Road Conditions, WNeWx Storm Chasers and more. It is a blessing to be part of a community so willing to help their neighbors, regardless of race, religion or side of the tracks!

The request came in to the Scotts Bluff County Scanner at 5:40 am that an elderly gentleman was trapped in his house and needed to get to the pharmacy to pick up medication, and had fallen once already.

We put out a request for help and within the HOUR the man’s sidewalks and driveway were plowed and another man offered to help him to the pharmacy.

THAT is why we do this.
