Execution-Style Armed Robbery

(GERING, Neb.) — May 21, 2024. That was the day that the world changed dramatically for local AirBnB owner and caterer, Sharon Henderson of rural Gering. So that everyone knows, Sharon is a dear friend of ours and to many in the area, and we purposely held onto this social media post until we could talk to her directly. Even after she granted us permission, my heart is still so heavy that it hurts to have to repeat this nightmare. But, we know that YOU want to know exactly what happened. We have so many questions too. It’s time to share with you, Sharon’s personal account of a brutal, execution-style armed robbery. Please pray for Sharon, her family and friends, her business and this community.

I really wasn’t going to talk about it. At least not to everyone because I was worried so much about how it would affect my business if everyone knew. But today I’m talking because I found it healing I guess to discuss the scary things these past few days and this was pretty freaking scary. It’s not getting easier to talk about it, but there are some business people especially that need to be aware.

Last Tuesday there was an armed robbery at my lodge. No one died thank God. but people were held execution style at gun point, and people were hurt, and two of us lost a lot. Wallets, IDs, money, credit cards, and probably the most valuable was innocent trust in people, which I thought was maybe one of my best qualities. Turns out it really wasn’t, because getting over this one is gonna take some strength, and time. Lots of both.

You should know this was NOT RANDOM. It was targeted and most likely has some extremely nefarious, ugly underlying people behind it. But it could easily be anyone in this area who does what I do be it through Airbnb or other platforms.

It was handled as well as it could be by local law enforcement and first responders and I’m so grateful for all of them and their continued support for me, their willingness to be forthcoming with information and steadfastness in trying to get to the bottom of a very ugly situation that has crossed state lines and become difficult to navigate.

The details are ugly and complicated and I won’t be posting them here.

I’m trying to get back to business as usual while adding lots of layers of security and fighting my own anxiety and fears.

What I want you to know is undocumented persons seemingly here to work on the “great” new projects that are happening in our community are OFTEN being brought here by some folks who don’t give a single shit about the people who live here and provide the money that brings them our way. Up until almost a week ago I never gave it a second thought. Having undocumented people come here to work seemed normal to me. It’s happened for years but I never give a thought to how some of them got here and the debts that they have to pay to the organizations that bring them and how they might choose to do that. And today there is not one single part of me that feels sorry for them for choosing to become a part of something so ugly no matter how much they want to live here and profit.

I can tell you that cleaning up the blood of people off of my floor is sickening… and I had to pay someone to do the worst of it. But that is all it has taken for me to open my eyes. And that’s all I’ll say about it now. Keep me in your prayers and keep my friend who got the worst of it all in your prayers because I promise you sleep does not come easy these days.

I guess take from this what you will. I’m pretty angry right now and grateful to have people to cook for and and other parts of my business to remind me that I can’t sit and wallow in it.

In Alliance around 1 a.m. on Saturday night, Alliance Police Department had one male under suspicion of DUI and after some testing and 4130 located, we had one male 10-15, headed to the Box Butte County Jail. And around 2:40 a.m., Trooper 290 ran a Triple I Check, which came up positive and also had conducted a search of the vehicle and that also resulted in one male 10-15 with 4130 located after medical clearance at RWMC. Around 4 p.m. on Sunday, a Nebraska State Trooper was flagged down for a driver that was possibly 10-47 or DUI. After locating the vehicle and conducting the testing, Trooper 130 and 346 worked in tandem with Trooper 346 taking one male 10-15 or under arrest to the Cheyenne County Jail. Around 7:20 p.m. last night, there was a medical call at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center for a 46 year old male who was unconscious with blood coming out of his mouth. He was transported to Regional West Medical Center with a potential head injury and loss of consciousness. He was taken in Trauma 1. And in partial traffic, an unusual call came across around 6:38 a.m. for an individual who was being held against his will by his grandmother. Because being a “follower” can be reduced to following someone’s social media account, we might consider ourselves as “followers” of Jesus being that simple: I prayed a prayer years ago, so therefore I’m a follower of Jesus. Did you know it is possible to be a Cultural Christian but not actually be a follower of Jesus? How do you know if you are truly following Jesus or simply “following” the patterns of Cultural Christianity? Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’ – Matthew 7:21-23 Cultural Christians are fans of Jesus; they may listen to Christian music, wear Christian t-shirts, and go to church services, but they’re not saved. They have never been truly born again. People can literally do Cultural Christian things and not even know Jesus! that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. – Romans 10:9-10 If you have never prayed and asked Jesus to be the Lord of your life, today is the day! Jesus wants to come into your heart and transform into a new person. No matter what you’ve done, God loves you, wants to save you and be the Lord of your life! Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. – 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 Maybe you are saved but are still living as a Cultural Christian and not a true disciple of Jesus. 1 Corinthians 3 talks about people who will barely make it into heaven and all of their work on earth will be burned up. They won’t have any rewards in heaven because they were Cultural Christians rather than followers of Jesus. True disciples follow the life of Jesus and teachings in scripture. Disciples follow Jesus. They don’t just sing worship songs; they follow Jesus. They don’t just pray; they follow Jesus. They don’t just read the Bible; they actually do what the Bible says and follow Jesus. Disciples follow the life of Jesus and the Word of God. It’s time to build your life as a disciple of Jesus! No matter where you are in your walk with God, it’s not too late to move from Cultural Christianity to living as a true disciple of Jesus! Reflect on today’s verses and pray that God would show you how to start living as a true disciple and how to take your walk with the Lord to the next level and move from being a fan to a follower.
