Officer-Shooting Suspect Captured

(OMAHA, Neb.) — Jason Davenport, the suspect involved in an officer-involved shooting on Thursday night, May 30, 2024 in Omaha, has been taken into custody after a standoff in Washington County.

Colonel John Bulldock with Nebraska State Patrol gave a press conference to update the public on this story.

At around 8:15 p.m. Thursday at a home near 30th and L streets in Omaha, law enforcement tried to arrest Davenport on an outstanding warrant for fleeing police last week. Davenport refused to leave the residence for approximately 45 minutes.

When he did emerge, he fired at least two shots from a handgun, jumped a fence and tried to steal a patrol car. A woman, Dana Banks, who had also been in the home, drove up and Davenport and Banks got away in the Ford Fusion. Sometime overnight, Davenport had switched vehicles.

At 3 a.m. the next morning, Washington County sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over a Kia Soul that was thought to be stolen, but the driver fled. After a short chase, Davenport and Banks got out of the car and ran. They hid in a semitrailer cab inside a shop building near Kennard where another standoff ensued.

Davenport was waving a gun and refused to drop it, so patrol shot at him. Banks surrendered and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. When Davenport still refused to surrender, the K-9 was sent in. Davenport was also taken into custody and sent to the hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening injuries.

The patrol said charges are pending against Davenport and Banks in Douglas and Washington counties. No law enforcement officers were wounded.
