School Safety Notices

(SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.) – This is a follow-up to the recent threats that various middle schools have experienced over the past week.

From Scottsbluff Police Department

The Scottsbluff Police Department and area law enforcement have initiated multiple investigations into several threatening social media posts. We are committed to identifying and addressing individuals who create and share this threatening information.

I want to assure parents and the community that we are taking any and all threats seriously. As we conduct our investigation, there will be an increased police presence on and around all school campuses.

Parents, please share with your child that we take threats to their safety very seriously. We will investigate and pursue charges against those individuals who create, share, or otherwise publish these threats.

Upon seeing them, please immediately report any threats to an adult, teacher, administrator, counselor, or law enforcement officer. I want to thank all who have forwarded us screenshots or information. Scottsbluff School Administrators, the Scottsbluff Police Department, and area law enforcement have responded quickly and have spent considerable time investigating all reports. We take each and every threat to any of our schools seriously and investigate them exhaustively.

Once again, we urge all community members to report ANY threatening post or picture they come across on social media to law enforcement immediately. Please do not assume that we are aware of each individual post or other verbal or written threats. We want to know. Your vigilance and active participation are crucial in ensuring the safety of our community.

Here’s a message from Scottsbluff Public Schools regarding social media threats

September 12, 2024

Scottsbluff Public Schools, in conjunction with Scottsbluff Police Department, continues to investigate and take all reports of threats seriously. School Administration, District Security, and Scottsbluff Police are aware of the messages referencing school threats that have been circulating on social media. These same posts are being shared in school districts across Nebraska and neighboring states, not just Scottsbluff. Out of an abundance of caution, we currently have an increased police presence monitoring our schools, but at this time we have received no credible information of a threat to any Scottsbluff school. If you or your child receives the messages, please help us stop the spread of misinformation by asking the poster on social media to remove the post and by not sharing. Please talk with your student about the seriousness of their actions if they make idle threats, share gossip or rumors, or re-post false information. Please urge them to instead share their concerns directly with an adult.

We encourage students and parents to continue to utilize the See It, Say It, Send It Tip Line in order to make reports or to contact your school any time you have information about a threat to our schools. We continue to strive to ensure a safe school community for our students and staff. If your child needs additional support, please do not hesitate to contact your school. Mitchell Tiger Families:

As many of you follow national and state news, there have been incidents involving tragic events on school campuses, one as close as Omaha. In addition to these events, the anniversary of 9/11 often invokes random acts of proposed violence, with one target being public schools. It is our understanding there have been several social media threats made throughout the nation. Some threats may have been localized to panhandle schools. It is no surprise as parents and concerned citizens, we grow increasingly anxious regarding the safety of our most precious asset, our children.

Please know we take the safety of our children and staff seriously every day at MPS. Safety is always on the forefront of our minds in all decisions made. When tragedies happen in other areas, whether in our state or across the nation, we analyze our own practices and procedures. We are in communication with local law enforcement often, officers visit with our students, and officers have recently conducted safety walk-thrus of our buildings. We believe in building solid relationships with students in order to create a safe culture both physically and emotionally.

There have been no threats through any source (social media, phone, etc.) made against Mitchell Public Schools or anyone associated with the district. We are aware of other districts’ situations near and far, and continue to follow all protocols and procedures to ensure a safe learning environment.

What we do ask all families and students is to remain vigilant and to communicate all potential risks with a trusted adult in the school or with law enforcement. “I was just kidding,” can no longer be considered an excuse when it comes to school violence or unsafe behavior. If you see or hear something concerning, whether it be from a close friend or barely an acquaintance, do not hesitate to relay the information to an adult. Willingness to speak up can potentially prevent a bad situation or can even save a life.

Do not hesitate to call the building principals or Dr. Urbanek with any additional questions you may have. We are all committed to Mitchell students each and every day, and while we can’t guarantee the behaviors of others, we strive to do whatever we can to create the best possible environment for our students.

Respectfully,

Dr. Katherine Urbanek, Supt.

Possible Message #3
Please see the notice from our Superintendent on September 13, 2024.

HPS Community:

As you are aware, we communicated with you yesterday regarding social media posts that were perceived by some as implying threats of school violence. This morning, we were alerted to an alarming image of HMS with the caption: “HMS SCHOOL SHOOTING, YOU ARE IN TERRIBLE DANGER.”

We have been working with the Hastings Police Department and have been able to find the source of the post.  We are thankful for the partnership we have with the HPD, they are a tremendous partner.  At no time were students or staff members in danger, this was a social media post with the intent of causing an extreme disruption.  The individual responsible will have swift and appropriate consequences.

I am so sorry to have to continue to send these types of messages as we know this caused several students, parents, and staff members to not feel safe and that is unacceptable.  HMS is safe and operating as usual with extra adult support.
