Another Murder, Failed Suicide

UPDATE 2/23/2025

Officials with the Nebraska State Patrol say they believe 39-year-old Toby Gray shot his wife, 35-year-old Heather Gray, and then shot himself. Heather died from a gunshot wound. A medical helicopter flew Toby to a Lincoln hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition.


Earlier this month there was a murder suicide attempt in Seward. Now another similar situation in Grand Island.

NSP Investigating Homicide in Clay County

(GRAND ISLAND, Neb.) — The Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a homicide that occurred Friday evening in rural Harvard.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a domestic disturbance at a residence in rural Harvard.

Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased woman with a gunshot wound and a man suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. There were also children inside the home when deputies arrived.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Nebraska State Patrol to assist in the investigation. The man was transported to Aurora Memorial Hospital and has since been flown to Bryan Health West Campus in Lincoln with life-threatening injuries.

The Nebraska State Patrol is the lead investigating agency in this case. Preliminarily, investigators believe the male subject shot the female and then shot himself. The children were not injured.

The male suspect remains in critical condition. The children were taken into protective care and are being placed with family.

Names are not being released currently pending family notification. Additional details will be released when possible. There is no danger to the public.

  1. If you’re going to use a headline that includes “another,” you might want to include some context for that inclusion. If it’s relevant enough to include in the headline it needs to be mentioned in the copy.
