Arrested for Arson and Murder

First and foremost our condolences go out to the family affected by this incident.

Scottsbluff Fire Department, Scottsbluff Police, and State of Nebraska Fire Marshal’s Office were all on scene until around 6 a.m. this morning, March 21, 2025. Also, per the Scottsbluff Police Department, a huge thank you to the Street Department and Scotts Bluff County CERT who also came out and assisted with road barricades and ensuring scene security. During incidents like these we are glad to have these positive working relationships with a multitude of agencies.

On 03/20/25 at 9:43 p.m., the Scottsbluff Police Department and Scottsbluff Fire Department, were dispatched to 1022 11th Ave. regarding a fire. Here is our original post.

Upon arrival it was determined that an adult male, Anthony Cervantes (74), had been doused with an accelerant and set on fire. Anthony Cervantes was found to be deceased at the scene. The suspect was identified as Anthony’s son, Elijah Cervantes (44). Both men reside at the home at 1022 11th Ave.

Elijah Cervantes was located and subsequently arrested for 2nd Degree Murder and 1st Degree Arson. The Scottsbluff Police Department was assisted by the Scotts Bluff Sheriff’s Office, Gering Police Department, CERT and the State of Nebraska Fire Marshal’s Office.
