A testimony of survival from Cover Hunting Co. LLC
My heart breaks for my little town of Ashby. I can’t describe how terrifying it was to watch the flames crest the hill above Hwy 2 and then realizing there hadn’t been an evacuation order for Ashby. Brecken and I took off knocking on doors and arousing people from their 2am sleep to “get out” as the flames rushed toward Hwy 2. By the time we got to the north side of Ashby the town was full of smoke and you could feel the change in the air and knew the flames were close. It’s hard to describe the pain I felt having to leave everyone to defend for themselves as we knew we needed to get home and get our own things in order.
Brecken loaded the Wilson as I worked to unload a sprayer off a pickup to be able to hook up another trailer. By the time I accomplished that she had the Wilson loaded with 7 horses and the tack room completely loaded into the other trailer and that trailer loaded down with horses. She said, “I knew the saddle that meant the most was Brady Wakefields so I grabbed that one first”. Bless her. She later told me it took her 8 minutes to evaluate the tack room!
I tried not to look up as I knew I just need to keep grinding and stay focused. I ran up to the house quick to get service and to see if I had any updates from Chris. He called and said that he, Jeff and Wyatt just saved Wyatt’s and that a few of the homes that Bec and I had just evacuated had burned to the ground.
I looked around my house trying to decide what I should take…standing there looking at the cedar chest that my pawpaw had made for me as wedding gift. full of my beloved keepsakes I said “I always told myself if I ever had to evacuate I would take you. But I can’t. There is no way I can lift you.” I took one last look at the things inside and walked away.
I headed out the door to open a few gates to the meadows for the pairs, heavy and a few horses and at that exact moment the wind shifted from the north and I watched the glow become farther away.
And with that comes the panic of my little town of Ashby all over again….

Today the fire is out. Our little town is completely surrounded by a burn scar. Several guys from our local fire department are currently sitting on the north side as a south wind is expected later this evening to put out any hot spots. All while everyone is calving. For us personally we had 42 yesterday and I know all my neighbors and friends are in the same boat. The girls wait for nothing and we take care of them the best we can amongst all else.
