Direct Selling Beef

I’m Brian Hale, sitting in for the late Howard Hale as we continue his legacy of speaking with cattlemen and women from around the globe. We ran it as a store for a little while. Our primary format is selling online, TK Ranch dot com. We have an online store.

How big of a land base do you have? Out here in the dry country, it takes quite a few acres for a cow-calf pair. We’ve been suffering different extremes of drought here since 2016, so our numbers are reduced a fair bit. There’s about 9,000 acres here, I guess.

Then you put how many cow-calf pairs on that 9,000? Because we’re finishing our beef, and because we’re not using grain to push them hard, we’re working on forage-finished, grass-finished label, have been for close to 30 years now, I guess. We have a number of classes of livestock here. Right now, we’ll be calving out just a bit over 200.

When the rains, we’re good, but then we keep all the yearlings. Most of our cattle, we don’t kill until they’re two years old to get them fat with the way we fatten them, so we end up with a couple years production on hand in addition to the cows.
