90 MPH and Nowhere to Hide

(SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.) — A 29-year-old Denver man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed pursuit through Scottsbluff in a stolen vehicle containing a loaded shotgun Sunday morning.

Gabriel Laurance Chacon was arrested Nov. 1 following a foot chase near East 28th Street, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Scotts Bluff County Court.

Officers spotted a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, reported stolen in Colorado and valued at $7,000, near South Beltline Highway and Broadway at approximately 10:18 a.m. When police attempted a traffic stop, Chacon allegedly fled at speeds reaching 90 mph, driving into oncoming traffic, crossing medians and cutting through yards and barbed-wire fences.

The truck crashed into another vehicle in a bank parking lot on East 20th Street before coming to a stop. Police apprehended Chacon after a brief foot pursuit.

Inside the truck, officers reported finding a loaded short-barreled shotgun, methamphetamine and marijuana. Authorities also noted that Chacon had a suspended Colorado driver’s license and was legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

Chacon faces multiple charges, including theft by receiving stolen property valued at $5,000 or more, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a short-barreled shotgun, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, possession of a controlled substance, willful reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license.

During an initial court appearance, Judge Mickey set bond at $131,000, with 10% allowed. County Court records show a hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. in Scotts Bluff County Court.

Chacon is also being held on an active Weld County, Colorado, felony warrant for weapon possession by a previous offender. Bond on that warrant is set at $4,000 cash or surety.
