Walmart Launches Tap to Pay

(BENTONVILLE, Arkansas) — If you’re like most shoppers, the convenience of Tap to Pay has become something you expect at the checkout. So when Walmart announced plans to update its point-of-sale system to support contactless payments, the reaction from many shoppers could be summed up in one word: Finally!

Walmart began rolling out Tap to Pay at select stores and Sam’s Club locations on August 24, with plans to have the technology available at all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026.

The new system will allow shoppers to pay using eligible contactless credit and debit cards, smartphones and smartwatches. Supported digital wallets include Apple Pay and Google Pay, among other contactless payment options.

For Western Nebraska shoppers, Walmart operates stores in communities including Scottsbluff, Chadron, Sidney, North Platte, Ogallala and McCook, among other Nebraska locations.

A state-by-state rollout schedule reported by 9to5Mac lists Nebraska for September 14, although Walmart has not publicly confirmed individual store rollout dates. The company has said the rollout will occur in phases throughout the remainder of the year.

The change marks a significant shift for Walmart, which for years relied primarily on its own Walmart Pay system rather than standard contactless payment services.

Walmart says Tap to Pay will be an additional payment option rather than a replacement for existing methods. Customers can continue using cash, traditional credit cards and Walmart Pay at checkout.

The company also plans to bring Tap to Pay to Walmart and Sam’s Club fuel stations by mid-2027.
