Teens Cause Football Game Disturbance

(CHEYENNE, Wyo.) — Twelve teenagers could face charges following a disturbance during a Central High School vs Kelly Walsh High School football game September 11, according to the Cheyenne Police Department.

Police said a group of teens from a rival Cheyenne high school attempted to provoke fights with students in the stands. Social media posts from members of the group indicated they were at the game to “rage-bait” Central students, according to police.

CPD officers and school staff repeatedly asked the group to stop, but police said the disruptive behavior continued throughout the evening.

Near the end of the game, officers contacted the teens and asked them to leave school property. Police said the teens refused and became physically confrontational, with several allegedly grabbing, spitting at and punching officers.

Several teens were detained for questioning and later released to their parents.

Following the incident, officers conducted a follow-up investigation that included reviewing body-worn camera footage and speaking with people involved. Police submitted probable cause affidavits to the Laramie County District Attorney’s Office for 12 teens, ages 13 to 17.

Potential charges include battery, assault on a peace officer, trespassing, breach of peace and interference.

Before the disturbance, Laramie County School District 1 had been working with stakeholders and school principals to develop enhanced safety protocols for athletic events. Police said the incident prompted the district to finalize those protocols.

Central defeated Kelly Walsh 20-7 in the Friday game.
