Here’s our co-host David Woodruff with Kristyn Harris.
Tell us about your cow herd.
“I’ve got Black Angus. I’d always wanted to raise beef cattle. It was actually music that got me into cattle because I met a family when I was at the gathering in Elko. They hired me to come out to their ranch in southern Idaho and play music for an event they were having. And I just hit it off with their family. I was about the same age as some of their granddaughters and wound up coming back to visit them, came back up for their branding in April. And one day they said to me, you know, if you ever want to buy your own cattle, we’ll be happy to help you take care of them and run them, because I’m on the road all the time. Music is my full-time job. My husband was raised on a cattle ranch in east Texas, but he’s also in the music business. He’s an audio engineer. And we both have had dreams and plans of having a ranch and running cattle of our own. But it was just, I jumped at that chance. It was a dream come true to start my own cattle herd. And so I started with just buying five cows, spread mouth mamas, and have built it up and improved my herd and kept my own replacement heifers and have got to learn all about the trade. And they’re still in Idaho right now, but I get up there several times a year. My husband and I actually just bought some property down here in Texas. So the plan is to bring the cows down. Diamond K is my brand.”
