Fire Potential Still High

Nebraska is completely red, and it’s not just Husker pride. Nebraska Forest Service posted a Red Flag Warning map with the following instructions:

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for almost all of today and tomorrow. High winds, low relative humidity, and perpetual drought are all factoring into extreme fire danger conditions. Any fires that start may rapidly grow and spread.

Over 90 percent of wildfires in Nebraska are human-caused. You can absolutely make a difference!

– Refrain from open burning on Red Flag Warning days.
– Do NOT park hot machinery on tall grass.
– Check for dragging trailer chains and underinflated tires before traveling.

Northeastern Nebraska has several fires burning that have kept departments busy. Both Wayne Volunteer Fire Department and Dakota City Fire Department have both requested area farmers take a break.

At this time there are numerous large or multiple fires happening in northeast Nebraska. We are asking area farmers to please stop harvesting until the winds subside.

If you have an emergency there may not be enough or no one to respond for your call. Thank you for your help.

Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office warned of a wildfire started by a combine earlier today. The fire closed down Highway 6 temporarily.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the Nebraska State Patrol and numerous rural fire departments were dispatched at 11:15 a.m. to the area of North 190th Street and Mill Road.

Crews from Waverly, Eagle, Greenwood, Ashland, Raymond, Southeast Rural and Malcolm responded to the scene. Greenwood was under a shelter-in-place order, according to the Cass County Emergency Management Agency.
