From Waterloo Fire Chief

At approximately 6:53 AM on 8-9-2025, Waterloo Fire Department was dispatched to a personal injury accident at Two Rivers State Park, located at 275th and F Street. The incident involved a vehicle with one party trapped with a large cottonwood tree that had fallen on top of it.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found 1 female, had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The male passenger was pinned in the vehicle, which had sustained extensive damage from the fallen tree.

The extraction process was complex and challenging due to the size and weight of the cottonwood tree. Emergency responders worked diligently for approximately 90 minutes to free the male patient from the wreckage. Once extricated, the male patient was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) with life-threatening injuries.
