(SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.) — On March 20, 2025, Deputy Enlow, while on patrol, was near 6th Ave. and East Overland when a Maroon Chevy Tahoe driven by a male pulled in front of him screaming out the window. Due to high winds, the deputy was unable to hear what the driver was saying. None the less, the deputy activated his emergency lights to perform a traffic stop. The car then led him on a high speed pursuit up 1st Ave, Broadway and W. 27th, until the chase was called off about Ave G and 27th Ave.
Within a few short minutes law enforcement were dispatched to the 1022 11th Ave in reference to a man on fire. Upon arrival, the house was in flames and a male badly burned. He had passed away.
Shortly after the Maroon Chevy Tahoe was located near Ron’s Towing and Elijah Cervantes was identified as the driver. He was then arrested and taken to jail.
The reporting party of the house fire stated that Elijah was the one who poured gasoline on his father and lit him on fire. She stated that the events happened while she was on the phone with the father and had heard through the phone what was happening.
Now half a year later on October 14, 2025 the Defendant appeared before Judge Dobrovolny via zoom. According to a report prepared by Lincoln Regional Center, the defendant was competent for standing trial. Without any objections they proceeded right into arraignment. He pleaded not guilty to:
- Murder in the second degree
- 1st degree arson
- Operating a vehicle to avoid arrest
- Willful recklessness
- Driving left on center
A preliminary hearing will be held on January 21, 2026.
