(ALLIANCE, Neb.) — The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an ongoing phone scam involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers from this agency.
Several citizens have reported receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be deputies or officers with the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office. The callers may state that the recipient has missed a court date, has an outstanding warrant, or owes fines or fees. In some cases, the caller demands immediate payment and may threaten arrest if payment is not made.
These calls are fraudulent.
The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office will never contact individuals by phone to demand payment, request gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other immediate forms of payment, nor will deputies threaten arrest over the phone.
Residents are advised to:
Hang up immediately if they receive a suspicious call.
Do not provide personal information, including Social Security numbers, banking details, or payment information.
Do not send money or gift cards to anyone claiming to be law enforcement.
Report the call to the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
If you believe you have been contacted by a scammer or have already provided information or payment, please contact the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible. You may also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov or file a complaint at www.ic3.gov
The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to share this information with family members, friends, and especially elderly individuals who are often targeted by these scams.
