(YORK, Neb.) — An SUV traveling on Highway 81 in the early morning veared off the road and ended up on BNSF tracks leading to a collision with a train. Condolences to the family of the victim and prayers for those who responded to this incident.
York County Nebraska Sheriff’s Office PRESS RELEASE
On Wednesday July 8, 2026, York County Emergency Communications was contacted by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) at approximately 4:20 a.m. reporting a collision between a locomotive and a motor vehicle.
The preliminary investigation determined a southbound SUV on Highway 81 left the roadway near mile marker 63, and came to rest on top of the railroad tracks below the highway. After the vehicle came to rest, it was struck by an eastbound BNSF locomotive. Deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the York Police Department arrived on scene and located the driver of the SUV deceased. No BNSF employees were injured in the crash.
The identity of the driver, who did not reside in the area, is being withheld at this time until proper identification and family notifications are made.
