Motocross Accident Update

UPDATE on Motocross Accident Victim

(KIMBALL, Neb.) — On Sunday, 7/13/25, 13-year-old Kai Zimmerman was doing what he loves most, riding motocross, when a devastating accident on the track changed his life forever.

🙁 Paralyzed From The Neck Down

Kai has suffered a severe spinal cord injury and is currently paralyzed from the neck down. Kai is on a ventilator which is breathing for him as well.

Yesterday, Kai underwent a second MRI of his body which revealed he also has two small wrist fractures. Kai has moments of being coherent and is trying to communicate with his family by blinking his eyes as his mom translates letters on a white board. Of course, before any other questions, he asked, “How is my bike?” Haha!

Kai was able to feel a “touch” on his leg, however Kai cannot move any portion of his body on his own.

From where the accident occurred on the track in rural Nebraska, Kai was transported to three different hospitals and life-flighted twice until reaching Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

At this time, the total financial burden is unknown.

Kai is a brave, determined young man who has always shown incredible strength and spirit. Right now, he’s in the fight of his life, and we’re doing everything we can to support him and his family through this challenging journey.

We are reaching out to our motocross families, our communities, friends, and family for help. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in Kai’s recovery and his family’s ability to focus on what matters most – being there for Kai.

Kai and his family are grateful for every prayer, every kind word, and every bit of support that has already surmounted and surpassed their imagination.

Kai is so WELL-LOVED and you all know, he is a fighter!

Thank you for standing with their family during this difficult time.

*All funds from GoFundMe will go directly towards medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, home modifications, mobility equipment, and ongoing care needs.

The generosity, love, and care for Kai is overwhelming and deeply appreciated. Help us help Kai and his family.

Excerpts from KCMX

Co-owner of the track Melissa Caldwell said motorcyclists and their families were at the track preparing for a race coming up in August.

Melissa said: “All of a sudden, we saw him go down … He just landed wrong, and it whipped him off the bike.”

Melissa advises riders to always wear their protective gear, even if they are just going out on the track to test something.

“If he was not wearing his helmet, boots, all of that, I don’t know if we would have even had a chance to save him,” Melissa said. “This was one of those freaky things that you never think is going to happen, and then it does. There was nothing anyone did wrong, it just happens, and it’s a dangerous sport.”

Melissa said several people had their hand in saving the little boy’s life and stepped up to do whatever they could.

July 13, 2025 – Scanner traffic indicated a serious motocross accident this morning around 11:00 a.m.

“We need assistance from a trooper. We have a 16-year-old male that was in a motorcross accident. They are doing CPR. Our sheriff’s en route requested NSP to head that direction as possible.”

Please pray for everyone involved.
