Dangerous Materials Found

UPDATE : Chadron Transfer Station is Now Open for receiving regular household solid waste. SWANN Staff took comprehensive steps to address the matter of inappropriately disposed of home-use oxygen tanks.

Approximately 10 a.m. on Monday December 16th, 2024, Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska (SWANN) discovered home-use oxygen tanks, approximately 12, in a load of trash that was collected from an alleyway in Gordon, NE. SWANN staff were immediately activated and as a precautionary measure closed the Transfer Station for safety purposes. Local news agencies and appropriate authorities were contacted for notice to the public of the closure and dangers that were posed.

After thorough investigation, which caused a backlog of trash disposal processes, Executive Director of SWANN, Jake Stewart, felt that the dangerous items had been eradicated from the debris that was collected containing these oxygen tanks.

SWANN and news agencies are committed to implementing an educational campaign to bring awareness to local area residents and communities on proper solid-waste disposal in our service region. The campaign is designed to prevent future occurrences of such hazardous and dangerous materials being inappropriately disposed of. Stewart and the SWANN Staff again, ask their customers to be vigilant in knowing what they’re disposing of and what is allowed in their dumpsters.

Since 1992, SWANN has provided exemplary services to the service area in which they serve, readers are encouraged to go to SWANN’s newly upgraded website swannsites.com. Their website is ever changing and growing with educational information about the solid-waste disposal services in the Northwest Nebraska panhandle.

(GORDON, Neb.) — The City of Gordon is alerting residents that the Chadron Transfer Station is closed. They have an important message below.

From City of Gordon, Nebraska

Chadron Transfer Station CLOSED until Further Notice due to alarming and potentially dangerous materials found in the COLLECTION TRUCK from Gordon.

Approximately 12 home oxygen tanks were disposed of incorrectly in an Alleyway dumpster in Gordon, NE, and collected with an Agency Collection Truck, on Monday 12/16.

There was the potential for this type of home-use oxygen tank to cause an explosion inside the collection truck and/or the baler unit at the Chadron Transfer Station, similar to what happened with the oxygen tank last May.

SWANN explained that their trucks are fed through a hopper that drops waste into the tank. Then the “packer plate” -which is located behind the truck cab- condenses it by packing it towards the back of the truck’s waste compactor tank and allows room for more material to be dropped into the tank. IF these oxygen tanks would have been caught in this process it could have potentially exploded on site, or within the baler.

All individuals and persons associated with using these oxygen bottles are encouraged to appropriately dispose of these bottles by delivering them to a community site worker at the community dump, or returning them to their oxygen/health/home care retailer where these bottles originated.

SWANN again, asks their customers to be vigilant in knowing what they’re disposing of and what is allowed in their dumpsters.
